Surbiton High School skiers triumph with support from former pupil and Olympian Chemmy Alcott
3 February 2010
Surbiton High School ski teams took gold and silver at the Ladies’ Ski Club annual British Schoolgirls’ Races, held in Flaine from 25 – 26 January. Surbiton High School, which is a member of the United Church Schools Trust (UCST), has seen its pupils nationally and internationally ranked in individual and team skiing. This includes former pupil Chemmy Alcott, the number one British female skier and Olympic hopeful.
An impressive performance gained the Surbiton pupils podium places in the Schools’ Slalom, Giant Slalom and Combined races. There were individual awards for Eloise Greenhalgh and Alice MacAulay, both in their age categories as well as the overall positions. The strength of the Surbiton High School skiers across both disciplines was evident; four girls placed in the top ten on both days. Stephanie Espinosa came first in the Individual Giant Slalom and Combined races. The Surbiton A team and the Surbiton B team met in the finals of the Dual Slalom, with the A team triumphing.
Chemmy Alcott, a former member of the Surbiton High School Ski Club, sent her good wishes from Vancouver to the pupils. Chemmy is a frequent visitor to the school and provides continued support for the Surbiton High School Ski Club. She will represent Great Britain at the Winter Olympics this month.
